The unique Tuntu tableware collection is full of the vibrant colors of Nordic nature
Finnish ceramics company Pentik is launching the colorful and playful Tuntu tableware collection, whose appeal lies in the interplay of vibrant, unique glazes. The tableware has been designed to look and feel good. With the new collection, Pentik wants to highlight unique Finnish ceramic expertise and its desire to maintain jobs in Finland now and in the future.

The special quality of the new Tuntu tableware collection lies in the lively glazes, mixed by Pentik’s ceramic professionals, which reflect the changing seasons of the north and the full spectrum of nature’s colors in the products. The unique glazes were developed at the Posio ceramics factory, and the result is years of design, experimentation, and development work. The diverse, rich colors and interesting drips of the Tuntu products are achieved by glazing the products twice, instead of the more common single glazing. The manufacturing of the tableware requires a lot of handcraft, and the aim is for the products to convey a genuine handcrafted feel. Pentik’s method of using glazes is uniquely artisanal, even though the dishes are produced industrially. Each Tuntu dish is unique.

The new tableware collection offers numerous table setting possibilities for both everyday mornings and more spectacular festive settings. The products in the collection can be assembled into a colorful, cheerful, and playful ensemble, or alternatively, a Scandinavian, earthy color scheme. Thanks to its versatility, the Tuntu tableware collection is perfectly suited for all kinds of homes and needs. All Pentik ceramic products, including Tuntu, are manufactured at the company's own ceramic factory in Finland.
Simply beautiful, functional, and easily combinable
The Tuntu tableware collection was designed by Tuuli Saarelainen. Tuuli's design philosophy is to create simply beautiful, durable, and user-friendly dishes that are easy to use in everyday life. “The starting point for designing the Tuntu tableware collection, in addition to beauty and color, was functionality, versatility, and the feel of the product in hand. The collection consists of various parts that work wonderfully either alone or combined,” says designer Tuuli Saarelainen. Due to their practical design, the products can also be used for sustainable everyday storage. “Some of the plates fit as lids over bowls, the dishes nest well, and they can be conveniently stacked. Beautiful and particularly easy in everyday life,” says the designer, who herself draws inspiration from the nature of Lapland.
42 ceramics professionals are employed in Posio
The manufacturing process of Tuntu series products is multi-stage and requires many enthusiastic professionals in the craft. All development and manufacturing work for the Tuntu tableware series has been carried out in Lapland. The production of Tuntu series products takes a total of 15 days from molding to firing. The journey from clay to finished dish involves 12-13 work stages, and during the manufacturing process, the product passes through the hands of an average of 12 ceramics experts. Pentik's ceramic factory still produces approximately 300,000 ceramic items annually with the help of 42 professionals. Over the years, the heavier work stages of the factory have been automated, but much is still done by hand. The ceramics industry is one of Posio municipality's most important livelihoods, and Pentik is the largest private employer in the municipality of about 3,000 inhabitants. In total, Pentik employs 60 people in Posio and about 200 people throughout Finland.

Pentik cherishes domestic ceramic expertise
The family business Pentik began in the early 1970s when Anu and Topi Pentikäinen moved to the small village of Posio in the north. In the wilderness of Lapland, Anu found space to think and be herself. In the Nordic nature and amidst creativity, the artist's soul was born. The log cabin, combining a home, a ceramics workshop, and a café, quickly became such a popular shopping destination and tourist attraction that the family could only find a quiet sleeping spot under the sauna benches. Artist Anu Pentik's reputation grew. Ceramics turned to gold, and dreams came true. Even today, Anu is the first to sneak into the ceramics factory, turn on the lights, and hurry to see how the previous day's creations turned out. Not because she has to, but out of passion and fire. A way of life. Ceramics are Pentik's roots and soul. "We live in unstable times, which is why we feel it's particularly important right now to cherish domestic ceramic expertise and maintain jobs in Finland. Our home and the world's northernmost ceramic factory are still in the middle of Nordic nature. And we feel that's how it should be. Now and in the future," states Anu Pentik, who still plays a strong role in Pentik's operations.
