A discussion has emerged in the media regarding plastic products containing bamboo fibre. In November 2020, the Finnish Food Authority ruled that the import and sale of plastic food contact materials containing unauthorised plant fibres (e.g., bamboo fibre) must be ceased, as they are non-compliant. Pentik has sold these plastic products containing bamboo fibre between 2011 and 2020. The plastic products containing bamboo fibre have been completely removed from the selection and their import was stopped in November 2018.
The Finnish Food Authority’s ruling is based on the fact that plastic products containing unauthorised plant fibres do not meet the safety requirements set for food contact materials in the EU. No risk assessment has been performed for these raw materials, and they are not on the positive list of approved raw materials in EU plastic regulation 10/2011.
Pentik complies with the Finnish Food Authority's recommendation to discontinue the use of these products. Consumers are advised to stop using products already acquired, as there is no certainty about the safety of these products. According to the Finnish Food Authority, short-term use has not been harmful to consumer health; instead, adverse effects always require very prolonged and repeated use.
