Teepee tent

Materials:

  • Fabric 3.3 m
  • 4 broomsticks or similar, 140 cm long, 24 mm diameter
  • Cord 4 m
  • Cotton bias tape 80 cm

Steam iron the fabric, cut off the selvages, and fold the fabric lengthwise 45 cm from the edge. It's easier to cut the teepee pieces symmetrically from the fold. Measure 108 cm in height along the fold, 44.5 cm in width at the bottom edge, and 9 cm in width at the top edge. These measurements include seam allowances.

Measure the top and bottom edges precisely at right angles to the fold, draw lines, and cut. This forms a triangle with a bottom edge of 89 cm, a top edge of 18 cm, and a central height of 108 cm. Cut three more identical pieces using the same technique.

For the fourth wall of the teepee, we need an opening, so we will make this wall from two parts. Use the folded triangle we just cut as a pattern. Keep the piece folded and place it over a single layer of fabric. Draw the top and bottom edges as in the pattern, but add 3 cm to the width in the middle for door opening seam allowances. Cut the piece. This creates a right-angled triangle, which is 47.5 cm at the bottom edge, 12 cm at the top edge, and 108 cm in height.

Cut two of these pieces. Overlock or zigzag stitch the top and bottom edges of all five pieces. Iron 3 cm from the middle of both halves of the opening vertically to the wrong side, sew the pieces together at the top edge for 20 cm at the fold, and sew the 3 cm wide strips along their entire height to the pieces. This forms an opening door curtain.

Iron and sew 3 cm from the top and bottom edge of each piece to the wrong side as a single hem. Then, sew the pieces together right sides facing, vertically, with 1 cm seam allowances. Press the seams open, and measure and pin the channels for the broomsticks on the right side along the seams. The channel depth is 4 cm, meaning a circumference of 8 cm - the previous seam remains in the middle of the channel, and four channels are formed. Sew the channels closed.

Sew a total of 4 pieces of cord, approximately 40 cm long, to the top edge next to the channels, to attach the teepee to the crossed broomsticks. Sew tie straps from folded bias tape 50 cm from the bottom edge to the front edge of the channel and to the inside of the teepee, at the same spot on both sides of the door opening, to hold the door opening strips aside if necessary. Place the broomsticks in a bundle, joining them 10 cm from the top, roughly to the same dimensions as the teepee's measurements.

Wrap plenty of cord around the joint to keep the poles in a sturdy bundle. Gradually push the teepee fabric up the broomsticks, simultaneously threading them into the channels. Once the teepee is in place, tie the cords sewn at the base of the channels to the bundled broomsticks and spread the broomsticks as far as they can go so that the teepee walls are taut.

The teepee tent in the pictures is sewn from Pentik's Metsänväki fabric.
