Good to know about Pentik fabrics
Pentik fabrics and oilcloths are 150 cm wide (incl. selvage). The fabric selection changes seasonally. Pentik cotton fabrics are perfect for sewing various home textiles. It's easy to sew curtains, tablecloths, cushion covers, bags, and other home textiles from these fabrics. The acrylic-coated fabric is well-suited for the kitchen and dining area as it is easy to wipe clean.
When sewing, it's good to consider hems and seam allowances, pattern alignment, and possible shrinkage allowance. The shrinkage allowance for cotton fabrics is 8%, for oilcloths 3%, and for linen fabrics 8-10%. You can find the precise care instructions for the fabric by opening the "Care instructions" section in the product information in the online store. We also provide care instructions with the purchased fabric. The length of a fabric bolt is 14 m, and an oilcloth roll is 9 meters. Color variations in fabrics may occur between different print batches.
Sold by the meter
Pentik fabrics are sold by the meter in the online store, and their pattern repeat is 64 cm, unless otherwise stated for the product. The length of a fabric bolt is 14 m, and an oilcloth roll is 9 meters. Fabrics are delivered as a single piece, cut and folded.
When sewing, it's good to consider hems and seam allowances, pattern alignment, and fabric shrinkage. Cotton fabrics can shrink by about 8% in the first wash, oilcloths by about 3%, and linen fabrics by about 8-10%. Check the fabric's shrinkage in the product's additional information and consider it when calculating fabric consumption.
Please note: Since fabrics are cut to the desired length, they are custom-made products and do not have the right of exchange or return.
How to estimate consumption:
- Long curtains: Finished curtain length + 30 cm sewing allowance (5+5 cm for the top hem and 10+10 cm for the bottom hem)
- Valance: Finished valance height + 20cm sewing allowance (3+3 cm for the top hem and 7+7 cm for the bottom hem)
- Tablecloth: Table length + 40-60 cm fabric hanging over the table + 10 cm sewing allowance. The amount of fabric hanging over the table is usually 20-30 cm/end and the sewing allowance is about 10 cm).
Curtain length
When considering the appropriate length for curtains, full-length straight side curtains are most often chosen. The best height for these curtains is about 1 cm from the floor. This way, the curtains are long enough to hang beautifully and prevent dirt more easily as they do not rub against the floor. If desired, curtains can also be chosen extra long, creating a festive look over the floor. For extra long curtains, it is good to ensure that at least 10 cm of fabric gathers on the floor.
Pattern alignment
Pattern alignment is needed when several adjacent products are made from the same fabric (e.g., curtains or two table runners). Pattern alignment means cutting the fabric so that the pattern is repeated identically in all cut fabric pieces (e.g., curtains). The larger and clearer the pattern (e.g., Pastelli fabric), the more important it is that the patterns align similarly. For smaller patterns (e.g., Mustikkametsä fabric), alignment is not as essential. If you want to sew, for example, four pattern-aligned curtains, 240 cm long, you should reserve three extra repeats of fabric.
Example consumption estimate for four 240 cm curtains when the fabric repeat is 64 cm
Curtain hems are usually 5+5 cm for the top hem and 10+10 cm for the bottom hem, meaning one curtain (without shrinkage allowance) requires 270 cm. If you want to wash the curtain fabric before sewing, about 3-5% shrinkage should be allowed for the first wash. If the fabric is aligned, one curtain will take 4.21 repeats. One curtain should be allocated 5 x 64 cm, or 320 cm of fabric, from which 270 cm goes into the curtain. 50 cm of alignment allowance remains from the fabric. Four curtains will result in three 50 cm long alignment pieces. Thus, one curtain requires 320 cm of fabric, except the last one only 270 cm = 12.30 meters. Fabrics are sold by the meter in the online store, so 13 meters of fabric must be clicked into the shopping cart. A fabric bolt contains about 14 m of fabric, and an acrylic-coated fabric roll contains about 9 meters of fabric.
