Fabric consumption:
- 1.5 m oilcloth
- 1.6 m cotton fabric
- 1 m cotton bias tape
Steam both fabrics generously on the wrong side to pre-shrink them. Trim off the selvages and cut both fabrics to precisely the same size, approximately 1.5 m wide and 1.6 m long. Pin the pieces together, right sides facing, along the edges and in places in the middle.
Sew the pieces together with a 1 cm seam allowance. Leave a 50 cm wide opening in the middle of one shorter end for turning the work right side out. Once the edges are sewn, finish them with a serger or zigzag stitch. Then turn the work right side out. First, press the seams open, then press the edges firmly to create a double fold for topstitching.
At this stage, sew the tie strap. Press the bias tape in half lengthwise and sew it into a 1 m long strip. Fold the ends of the bias tape inside the strap and sew them in place. Press both edges of the open opening of the mat 1 cm to the wrong side and pin them precisely together. Measure the midpoint of the entire side, mark it with a pin, fold the sewn bias tape in half, and attach the fold between the hemmed edges at the pin mark.
Sew the opening closed close to the edge, and at the same time, sew the tie strap in place. Pin the top and bottom layers of the mat together in places to keep them stable, and begin topstitching 2 cm from the edge all around the mat. Finally, press the sides firmly, fold the mat lengthwise into three approximately 50 cm wide sections, roll it lengthwise from the bottom towards the ties, and tie the ties in a bow around the roll.
