Good to know about Pentik’s fabrics

Pentik’s fabrics and coated fabrics are 150 cm wide (incl. selvedge). The fabric range changes according to the season. Pentik’s cotton fabrics are great for sewing various interior textiles. It is easy to sew curtains, tablecloths, pillow cases, bags and other home textiles from our fabrics.

In sewing you need to pay attention to hem and seam allowances, pattern matching and possible shrinkage. Cotton fabrics tend to shrink up to 8 %, acrylic coated fabrics 3 % and linen fabrics between 8-10 %. From our web shop you can find detailed care instructions of each fabric by clicking on ”Show more” in the product info section. You will also receive these instructions with the fabric you buy. The length of the bolt is 14 m, whereas the coated fabric roll contains 9 metres of fabric. The tone of our fabrics may vary between different printing batches.

Selling by metre

Pentik’s fabrics are sold by metre, and their repeat is 64 cm unless otherwise stated in the product. The length of the bolt is 14 m, whereas the coated fabric coll contains 9 metres of fabric. We deliver all our fabrics in one piece, cut and fold.

In sewing you need to pay attention to hem and seam allowances, pattern matching and possible shrinkage. Cotton fabrics tend to shrink up to 8 %, acrylic coated fabrics 3 % and linen fabrics between 8-10 %. Check the shrinkage info from detailed product information and make sure to include it in your calculations for the amount of fabric.

Please note: Since all fabrics are cut to the desired length, they are custom made products with no exchange or return policy.

This helps you calculating the amount of fabric:

  • Long straight curtains: The length of the curtain + 30 cm seam allowance (5+5 cm for the top hem and 10+10 cm for the bottom hem)
  • Pelmet curtain: The height of the curtain + 20 cm seam allowance (3+3 cm for the top hem and 7+7 cm for the bottom hem)
  • Tablecloth: The length of the table + 40–60 cm of fabric that descends over the table ends + 10 cm seam allowance. The amount of the fabric descending over the table ends is generally 20–30 cm per table end and the seam allowance is approx. 10 cm.

Matching the patterns

Pattern matching becomes important when you sew several adjacent products (f. ex. curtains or two table runners) of the same fabric. In these cases you have to cut the fabric so that the pattern is similarly repeated in both/all cut pieces (f. ex. in curtains). The bigger and clearer the patterning (f. ex. Pastelli fabric), the more important it is to match the patterns similarly. With smaller patterns (f. ex. Omenapuu fabric) careful matching is not that crucial. For example, if you wish to sew four pattern-matched 240 cm long curtains, you need to reserve fabric for three additional repeats.

Example: amount estimate for four 240 cm curtains when the repeat of the fabric is 64 cm

As the hem allowances of the curtains are generally 5+5 cm for the top hem and 10+10 cm for the bottom hem, you will need 270 cm of fabric (shrinkage is not counted here yet) for one curtain. If you wash the curtain fabric before sewing it, remember that the fabric may shrink 3-5 % in the first wash. If the fabric is to be matched, 4.21 repeats are needed for one curtain. This means that for one curtain you need altogether 5 x 64 cm (320 cm) of fabric, of which 270 cm goes for the curtain. An additional matching piece of 50 cm will remain, so four curtains means three of these matching pieces. Thus 320 cm of fabric is needed for each curtain, except the last curtain for which 270 cm = 12.30 metres will do. All fabrics in our web shop are sold by metre, which means you have to click 13 metres of the fabric to your basket. The length of the bolt is 14 m, whereas the coated fabric coll contains 9 metres of fabric.
